Porsche proved that it still is Germany's favorite sports car brand when it topped 7 out of 15 categories in the “The Sportiest Cars of 2011” survey conducted by the German Sport Auto magazine. No other marque came close to winning as many first places in this year's survey, beating fellow Deutsch marques Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Heading the polls is Porsche's army of 911's - the Carrera GTS, the topless Turbo S Cabriolet, and its two road-going race cars, the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS.

It seems like we’re on a roll for breaking records in the motorsports world. On the 10th of June 2011, rally driver Mark Higgins set an all-time lap record on the famed Isle of Man TT Mountain Course. With an average speed of 185.63 km/h (peaking 260 km/h!), Higgins completed the 59.5-kilometer course in 19 minutes and 37 seconds driving a “stock” US spec 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Albeit being a “production US spec” unit, some modifications were made for safety purposes, which includes a Hockley Motorsports roll cage, Motordrive competition seats, Mintex brake pads, and Tein springs and dampers. Nonetheless, the WRX STI was powered the standard 305hp turbocharged boxer engine and ran on street-legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo Tires making it technically “stock”.

Plying through Metro Manila's busy roads, there'd be times when we'd get stuck in the worst traffic jams that we all wished we never left the comforts of the office or the house. And for the longest time, we relied on making weird faces, giving the “bird sign” at hapless traffic enforcers, or screaming like a deranged lunatic at the car next to ours as a way of coping with stress. Thankfully, the MMDA and TV5 finally joined forces to come up with the first online traffic monitoring system; saving us all from the trouble of traffic jams, and thus slowing down my receding hairline.
MMDA's new “Traffic Navigator” is a live traffic condition monitor for six of Metro Manila's major roads, available for free to anyone connected to the web. Updated every few minutes, it currently covers EDSA, Quezon Ave., España, C5, Roxas Boulevard, and the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). Although the graphics suspiciously look like a rip-off of Hong Kong and Singapore's subway maps, the site's interface is simple, quick to understand, and (most importantly) idiot-proof.

Volvo has always been known for producing some of the world's safest cars. However, they've also been perceived by the general public as somewhat boring. That's why in recent years, the Scandinavian automaker has been trying to break free from the social stigma through its latest breed of vanguard Volvos. The road to revolution began in 2002 with the introduction of the chic XC90, which was followed suit by the hot hatch C30 in 2007. Then late last year, Volvo finally unleashed their fiercest four-door yet - the S60 - breaking the brand out of its stale stereotype.

Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima proved to world yet again why he's called “King of the Mountain” when finally he shattered the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb's 10-minute barrier last June 26, 2011. Piloting a purpose-built 900 horsepower Team GoPro Monster Sport Suzuki SX4, Monster conquered the 20-kilometer 156-turn “Race to the Clouds,” and reached the 4,300 meter high summit in just 9 minutes and 51.278 seconds, capturing his sixth consecutive overall victory in the process. Even before he was old enough to get a driver's license, Gary Thompson was already busy racking up the victories on the race track. The young Irishman practically grew up in the circuits around the world - racing in go karts, Formula BMW, and more recently in the Japanese Formula 3 series. With a natural talent for speed and a dedicated team behind him, Gary surely has his sights fixed on Formula One to join the ranks of fellow countrymen Ralph Firman Jr. and Eddie Irvine.

Before last weekend set in, American drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. was happily holding-on to his record for World’s Longest Car Drift, which he set in a stock Ford Mustang at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in December of 2008. Two and a half years later, Mauro Calo had the pleasure of snatching the title away from him in a 2011 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG at the Mercedes-Benz World in England.
