Porsche Carrera Cup Asia preps for Marina Bay street circuit showdown

Aside from Alonso, Vettel, Button, and Schumacher, the Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia will also be lining up on the grid at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore this weekend. Held as a support race to the 2012 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore GP, this will be Round 9 of the 11-race 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season.
A record 28 identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars will race around the 5.073 km track prior to the start of the main GP. Though they won't be racing at night, the drivers will only have 12 laps to fight it out for the top spot of the podium - making this a tough dogfight to the finish.
Leading the championship into the Lion City is Swiss driver Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase, who holds a comfortable 34 point advantage over reigning champion, Japan's Keita Sawa of the LKM Racing Team. Sitting in third spot is China's Tung Ho-Pin with Budweiser Team StarChase, tied with Macau youngster Rodolfo Avila of Team Jebsen. Meanwhile, Austrian driver Martin Ragginger with Team Eagle - Jiejun & Junbaojie is only one point behind the pair.
But despite the strong title chase, Craig Baird, driving the race title sponsor-SC Global Racing Porsche, will be out to grab the victory. Baird has won in Singapore in 2010, and finished second in 2011, making him a very strong contender in this year's race.
Besides the top-tier experienced full-time drivers, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia also has some non-professional racing drivers who will compete wheel-to-wheel just as fiercely for the title.
Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen leads the Class B standings, having leapfrogged series newcomer Egidio Perfetti of Seminole Racing Team after the Swiss driver's unlucky outing in Malaysia. OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia has fought back from an early-season setback to stay in title contention, as has series newcomer, China’s Huang Chu Han of Asia Racing Team. And flying the flag for Singapore are Ringo Chong of Team Kangshun and Dorr McElrea of Racing's Yuey Tan.
Catch Round 9 of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia this Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore. Lights go out at 1725H (+8 GMT).
