For most students, summer is the time to go on vacation or enjoy other “extra curricular activities.” But there's an exception. A bunch of engineering students from different universities and colleges around the Philippines have been toiling away to get their machines ready for this year's Shell Eco-marathon Asia.
The third edition of the Shell Eco-marathon Asia will once again be held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 4 to 7, 2013. Around 1,500 students from 18 countries in Asia are expected to compete this year. The Philippine contingent, on the other hand, will have a total of 10 teams from top engineering schools in the Philippines - four more than in 2012.

Last July, students from different universities took to the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia to show off their stuff at the 2012 Shell Eco-marathon Asia. Of the contenders from 18 countries all over Asia and the Middle East, six teams were from Philippine universities.
The opportunity to show off their Shell Eco-marathon vehicles to the public presented itself at the recently-concluded Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) Annual National Convention at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City. It was arguably the biggest gathering of the year for engineers and engineering students.

Something big is coming to Shell. How big? Well, they sent us this 15 second teaser of what they'd like to hail as the “Most exciting car launch of the year.”
While they're keeping mum on what exactly is hiding under the cloth, the silhouette resembles a modern Formula 1 car. But from what we can see, its front wing, side pods, air intake, and rear wing are either too high or too angular to be anything close to the past or present grand prix cars. One important detail though is that the Italian racing red cover bears the emblem of Scuderia Ferrari.

In 2011, team Luk Jao Mae Khlong Prapa of Dhurakij Pubdit University Thailand set a new record at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia by traveling 2,213.4 km on one liter of fuel - beating the previous year's record by almost 700 kms. It was a feat no one thought was beatable. But a year later, the team from Thailand returned to the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and proved that they can go further.
Equivalent of driving from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi in just one liter of fuel, team Luk Jao Mae Khlong Prapa beat their 2011 record by a further 689.6 kms at the Shell Eco-marathon 2012 with a mileage of 2,903 km/l. Meanwhile, Proto from the De La Salle University - Manila (DLSU - M) and TIP Mileage from the Technological Institute of the Philippines (IP) also took home awards for the country.

It was a special Sunday last June 10, 2012 for the winners of and Shell FuelSave's “Save on Your Summer Road Trip” contest. So maybe summer’s over, but that didn’t stop us from treating them and a bunch of their friends to a road trip and having fun. Ford Philippines was also kind enough to lend us three brand-spanking-new Fiesta Sport Plus' for the drive so we can find out for ourselves just how frugal their hot hatch really is.
Over the summer, and Shell FuelSave held a contest asking people to send in a photo showing their best fuel saving habits. The winners received free fuel and other goodies from Shell FuelSave, as well as an invitation to's FuelSave Workshop on a summer road trip. During the out of town workshop, we got to see some sights, eat some good food, and learn a bit about fuel economy. We also got to watch Pacquiao beat Bradley to within an inch of his life, only to lose on the judges’ scorecards. At least we were well-fed.

This July 4 to 7, 2012, 134 student teams from 18 countries all over Asia and the Middle East will line up on the grid at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia to see who can travel the farthest on a single liter of fuel. This is the 2012 Shell Eco-marathon Asia
Six university teams from the Philippines will be participating in this year's competition. The roster includes De La Salle University - Manila, Technological Institute of the Philippines, University of the Philippines - Diliman, and University of San Carlos. Last year, the University of the Philippines’ Team Kidlat won the Diesel Fuel Award under the Urban Concept category by achieving 60 km/L with their car. Meanwhile, the Mapua Institute of Technology won second place for the Safety Award under the Prototype Category and ran 186 km/L of gasoline. The Philippine contingent surely hopes to do one better this year.

With the poor traffic conditions and high fuel prices in the Philippines, it comes as no surprise when the latest Shell FuelSave Index shows that Filipino drivers has the top fuel saving awareness in Asia.
According to the study, 94% of those surveyed see fuel efficiency as an important way to save money. That pretty much explains why 87% of them are willing to change their driving behavior to save fuel. Better yet, 85% have actually changed the way they drive to reduce fuel consumption. However, the index has revealed that 20% say that more education and information is needed in order for Filipinos to learn how to drive more efficiently.
So in response to these findings, Shell launched the “Target One Million” campaign to help one million motorists across the globe learn how to save fuel.
