Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost crowned 2012 International Engine of the Year

At the recent 2012 International Engine of the Year Awards, Ford’s 1.0-liter three cylinder EcoBoost engine carried the day and took home the coveted title of this year’s International Engine of the Year. The prestigious competition's panel of juries, made up of over 70 of the world’s most-respected motoring journalists, voted for Ford’s punchy yet fuel-frugal engine, which will have plenty of action under the hood of the all-new 2013 Focus. And on top of that, Ford's compact EcoBoost engine also took home the accolades for the “Best New Engine of 2012” and “Sub-1.0-liter” categories.
"This was a dominant win by the Ford engine and it is important to remember that the overall engine of the year award is not linked to engine capacity or any other criteria beyond the excellence of its engineering and the degree to which it delivers its capabilities in a vehicle and within the broader marketplace. That the small capacity engines continue to impress the most in overall terms, even against the larger, higher performance engines, says a great deal about how the automotive industry has developed in recent years," said Dean Slavnich, Editor of Engine Technology International and Co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards.
Punching above their weight, small capacity engines continue to surprise with their performance, fuel efficiency, and low carbon emissions. However, GM’s Range Extender 1.4-liter engine (found in the new Chevrolet Volt) is a big revelation. "Pure battery EVs have never been a real-world, viable alternative to the internal combustion engine due to their lack of range and poor cold-weather performance, but GM's range extender concept solves both issues and thus is a genuine blueprint for the future,” commented Graham Johnson, Co-chairman of the Awards and Managing Director of UKIP Media and Events - the company that organizes the Engine Expo and the Awards.
Category Winners
Meanwhile, BMW once again proved their dominance in engine ingenuity for bagging the most awards this year. Their list of achievements include: the PSA Peugeot-Citroen co-developed 1.6-liter turbo petrol (1.4- to 1.8-liter Category), 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder petrol (1.8- to 2.0-liter Category), 3.0-liter bi-turbo six-cylinder gasoline (2.5- to 3.0-liter), and their fire breathing 4.0-liter V8 from the M3 (3.0- to 4.0-liter Category). 
The Volkswagen group didn't go home empty handed either, winning not just one but two awards in 1- to 1.4-liter and 2- to 2.5-liter categories with their 1.4-liter TSI and 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo engine, respectively. And garnering the “Best Performance Engine” award for the second consecutive year was Ferrari's 458 Italia and its 4.5-liter V8.
The 14th International Engine of the Year Awards (IEOTYA) was held at Stuttgart, Germany on the 13th of June, 2012. It is one of the most anticipated events in the motoring industry, as it showcases the advancement of powertrain engineering.
