I'm pretty sure we're all too familiar how traffic suddenly grinds to a halt when there's an accident on the road. No, it's not always because it blocks a lane or two. If you haven't yet noticed, most, if not all, slow down just to take a look before they speed off and go about their day. I know I have more than a few times. But would you ever stop to help someone in need? Seriously, would you go out of your way to pick up a bloody half-dead person on the road and rush them to the hosiptal or would you rather let the next guy behind you do the deed?

Thankfully, there are people out there who, in a split-second, disregard their own well-being to help out a person in need. This is why Goodyear annually searches for the Philippines' Bayani ng Kalsada to recognize everyday highway heroes. And for 2012, they have recently awarded five outstanding motorists who have demonstrated heroism on the road to help strangers.

Glenn Arcillia | Luzon Regional Champion
Taxi driver Glenn Arcillia assisted a couple in an SUV who were shot by two men on a motorcycle. Hearing pleas for help from inside the vehicle, he rushed them to Medical City in Metro Manila. The wife survived the shooting as a result of Arcilla’s assistance. Unfortunately, her husband was declared dead on arrival.

Rolando Carullo | NCR Regional Champion
Jeepney driver Rolando Carullo was driving along the service road when he came across a child gasping for breath by the roadside. He politely asked his passengers to give way to the child and his parent as he rushed them to the Taguig Pateros Hospital without asking for payment.

Roel Perez Limen | Mindanao Regional Champion
Jeepney driver Roel Limen was enroute to Zambowood in Zamboanga City when he noticed something peculiar about an old woman on the side of the road. She was walking alone and seemed to be having a heart attack. He assisted her immediately, helped her inside his jeepney, and brought her to the emergency room of the General Hospital in Zambowood. After dropping his other passengers off at the Zambowood Market, he returned to the hospital to check on the old lady. When she was released, Limen drove her home without asking for payment.

Christopher Montel Fonclara | Visayas Regional and Goodyear Bayani ng Kalsada National Champion
One evening, tricycle driver Christopher Fonclara was enroute to UP Miagao in Iloilo when he witnessed an accident involving a truck and a tricycle resulting in four wounded victims. He first rushed to the one who seemed to be in fatal condition and brought him to Gimbal Hospital in Iloilo, then went back to help the other victims. Thanks to Fonclara, two of the victims survived.

Dr. Lorraine Marie Badoy | Special Awardee
Dr. Lorraine Marie Badoy was driving her vehicle when she noticed a vehicle on the side of the road with a well-dressed adult male hunched over and vomiting beside it. She immediately pulled over to see if she could be of assistance, and recognized symptoms of a heart attack upon observing the gentleman. She quickly drove the victim, an Atty. Consunji, to the Makati Medical Center where he was given immediate attention at the emergency room. Unfortunately, Atty. Consunji did not survive due to a massive heart attack.

Goodyear Bayani ng Kalsada National Champion Christopher M. Fonclara of Iloilo City received a cash prize of P80,000 and a trophy in recognition of his heroic act. Meanwhile, the Regional Champions each received P30,000 from Goodyear and gift packages from Centro Negosyo and Petron. Additionally, Dr. Lorraine Marie Badoy of Makati City also received a ‘special award’ and recognition.

“Each of the 2013 Bayani ng Kalsada finalists is a true hero, and their efforts to help others should be applauded,” said Goodyear Philippines Managing Director Ron Castro. “Safety is a core value of Goodyear and at the heart of everything we do, so we are proud to help recognize these individuals publicly for their selfless acts in helping keep others safe on the road.”
