My occupation allows me to drive almost all the new cars you see on the road. We typically test them for performance, handling, and fuel-efficiency. Of course, it’s also good put these set of wheels through our daily routines to see just how practical they are. But nothing assesses a car's comfort quite like doing errands outside our comfort zone. And to prove a point, Ford Philippines turned us burly men into Mr. Moms for a day with the all-new Focus.

Most, if not all new vehicles sold in the market today come standard with airbags and anti-lock brakes. As competition stiffens and safety standards get higher, even entry-level models now come with these safety supplements. But how safe really are they?

In the US, automobile safety is stringently evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) where its safety arm, the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), is designated to encourage automobile makers to build safer vehicles. They do this by rigorously checking each new vehicle how it fairs in a crash. And one of the most recent models to pass their test with a full five-star rating is the all-new 2013 Ford Focus.

2012 Paris Motor Show : The Inside Story

Paris is, without a doubt, the most romantic city in the world. Its culture, cuisine, and bright spirit are representative of its native language, which is quite possibly the most beautiful language known to man. It is home to some of the most iconic structures to have ever been built - the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe. Nothing prepares you for its charm, nostalgia, and chic. Its effervescent warmth makes it the most visited city in the world. So when the chance to go to the Mondial de l’Automobile 2012, otherwise known as the Paris Motor Show, popped-up, I didn't think twice to grab it. It’s only five hours away from where I live, and kids go free. So, what the heck!

For many of us, traveling 900 kilometers means cost and multiple fuel pit stops; but for Ford Philippines, it spells “CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.” The Department of Energy (DOE) recently witnessed a fuel economy run of the all-new Focus, which spanned a total of 945 kilometers between Manila and Pangasinan and presented above satisfactory results.

While there might be over a thousand fuel saving tutorials online, nothing compares to a one-on-one hands-on training with a real expert. Hiring one for a few days ain't gonna be cheap, but wouldn’t it be great if you get one with a car right from the dealership? One that doesn't need to sleep, eat, nor drink and will gladly serve you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year, too. Well, that dream has finally come true in Ford’s EcoMode, your personal eco-driving coach available with the all-new Focus.

For the past six years, Ford Group Philippines (FGP) has been on the road pitching its Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) campaign in schools, colleges, and private corporations. To date, the program has successfully trained more than 20,000 participants on the importance of road safety. As part of its first batch of students, I've attended well over a dozen of DSFL's classroom lessons and practically memorized each page of its presentation like the back of my hand. But no matter how repetitive it may sound, I always learn something new and make it a point to listen as a personal reminder to my responsibility as a road user.

Road safety is a subject matter that should never be taken lightly. Last year alone, the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS) reported 18,810 traffic accidents, 7,670 of which involved fatality or injury. And in an occupation that mainly involves driving, we might just put ourselves and others at risk whenever we go on the road. That's why Ford took the initiative to host a special DSFL seminar just for us motoring media last week at the Ortigas Home Depot in Pasig City. The half-day course included a one-hour lecture on safe, smart, and fuel-efficient driving habits followed by a hands-on training on parallel parking and eco-driving using the Ford Fiesta and Focus.

Slip Angle | When Automatic Isn’t

Words by Andre Palma

My first encounter with an automatic gearbox was back in college. Somehow, as the proctoring professor arrived at the examination room, I found myself separated from my exam permit during finals week. With my usual dumb luck, the said permit was a kilometer away and it was raining. A set of keys was tossed in my direction and off I went, down four flights of stairs with my academic life hanging in the balance. A sense of hope filled me. I could still make finals.

After fiddling with a Solex lock for what seemed to be an eternity, I jumped into the driver’s seat of the Ford Laser hatch, and in a single motion, kicked the clutch and tried to fumble the gear stick into neutral. To my horror, there wasn’t a clutch pedal in the car. Add to that the fact that the usual H-pattern gear change was missing as well. In its place were the mocking letters P, R, N, and D

It was then when I panicked.
