Once again, it's the perfect time of the year to buy a Toyota. The Toyota Caravan is finally back in town from October 5 to 12, 2012 at the 34th St. corner 9th Avenue (Beside Mercato, near the Lexus Manila showroom) of the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. And this time around, they're offering as much as P280,000 in discounts when you buy a Toyota vehicle at the show.

Just by showing up at the Toyota Caravan, all visitors get an instant P5,000 discount. Then, when you go for a test drive, they'll give you an additional discount of up to P100,000. Not bad. Not bad at all.

But that's not all to it! Trade-in your old vehicle and get a chance to win an additional P50,000 discount. Plus, current Toyota vehicle owners can win a whopping P100,000 discount in the daily reservation raffle! Still want more? Great!

Just by putting a reservation on a Toyota vehicle at the Toyota Caravan, you get more raffle coupons to win one of five Vios or five Innovas in the Toyota Best Sellers raffle promo.

Adding new bumpers, lights, and rims isn’t enough to merit a six-year-old SUV and pickup a second-look; they would need more power, more toys, and more fun. At last, a year after Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) launched the new 2012 Fortuner and Hilux, they have received the message that the pair needed more than just a cosmetic upgrade. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you the new and improved Toyota Fortuner and Hilux.

Some might still recall when two years ago, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) put together a special one-off Vios that was packed with parts from TRD. It came stuffed with wrap-around bodykits, sport dampers, and an exclusive badge that read “TRD Sportivo.” Though it was not sold as a complete package, you can still buy the parts at your local Toyota dealership piece by piece. Only problem is, it'll set you back in the region of P200,000, on top of the tag price of a brand-new Vios.

Well, TMP is now sharing its blessings to all us by making the new revamped Vios 1.5G TRD Sportivo available in showrooms nationwide, at a price we can now realisticly afford.

Next Attraction: Toyota's all-new 2013 RAV4

Words by Rico Soriano

2012 is a big year for Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP). Apart from setting an all-time sales record in the Philippines last July, they also launched all-new models and revised versions of their existing product portfolio, starting from the smart Prius C, to the familiar Fortuner-Hilux-Innova IMV models, and the all-new Camry. These further cement Toyota on the top of almost any car buyers’ wish-list.

However, if there’s a market segment where Toyota seems to languish, it’s the compact SUV segment where the aging and pricey RAV4 is surpassed by new players in the market with the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru XV.

In other markets, the Recreational Active Vehicle with 4WD - more commonly known as the RAV4 - received a Camry-esque facelift as a final refresh, but that model didn’t officially make it to our shores. With the current RAV4 now due for a complete makeover, rumors have spread that an all-new model, based on the Camry's platform, will start production by the third quarter of this year.

Toyota 86: A tough act to follow

The most basic formula in making a great sports car is to put the most powerful engine you can possibly fit into the lightest chassis you can find. It can accelerate quicker, brake later, and corner much much faster. No other car does this better than the Toyota Corolla AE86. The AE86 earned its title from years of being raced, thrashed, and – up until recently – drifted. And after a rich 30-year history, there is no doubt that the 86 or the Hachi-Rouku is an undisputed legend.

But after three decades of its reign, amidst the flurry of front wheel drive cars, Toyota finally decided to revive the legend of their front-engined rear-wheel-drive coupe. Meet the new 86, Toyota's latest reincarnation of the ideal affordable sports car.

I must say, it looks really cool. This sleek new sports car has a sophistication that's fit for any occasion. And while Toyota got the looks department spot on, the question now is, “Is better than the original AE86?”

Japanese culture is an eclectic mix of Western, traditional, and futuristic influences. Nowhere is this better seen than in its railway system, which ranges from jam-packed urban subway systems, to quaint, picturesque rural lines that allow travelers to savor the sights and foods of Japan in slow-moving comfort. But when asked to consider a “Japanese train,” most people immediately picture the Shinkansen, or the “bullet train”. This land-bound jet-liner is one of the most iconic symbols of Japanese progress from the 20th century.

Perhaps not quite as iconic, but equally pervasive in Japanese culture, is the minivan. While the modern minivan is arguably an American phenomenon, Japan has put its own unique twist on it. Where the US minivan is a fop to the so-called “soccer mom”, the Japanese minivan is an ostentatious status symbol. In a land teeming with diminutive Kei cars and bicycles, it’s the king of the road. And they don’t come much more kingly than the Toyota Alphard. Its reign is so dominant, in fact, that there are more of these vans in Japan than Corollas.

Light weight, rear wheel drive, and ideal power-to-weight ratio are the perfect characteristics that make a great Japanese sportscar. Toyota got it right on the money in 1982 when they created the Corolla Levin and Trueno, otherwise known as the AE86 or “Hachiroku.” Many drivers found it as the preferred weapon of choice for race tracks and especially mountain passes in Japan. Unfortunately, Toyota stopped manufacturing this rare breed of rear-wheel-drive two-door coupes in 1987. But 25 years later, Toyota went back to basics and revived the legend of the 86.

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) officially launched the 86 back in June with a price tag of a little over P1.5 million. It was like a dream come true. All the hype made it seem as if all of the 94 million inhabitants of this country wanted one, except there's one small problem. TMP was only able to get their hands on 77 units; and by the time it made its public debut, all have been spoken for. Well, our prayers have been answered, because at the 4th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), Toyota announced that 200 additional units are headed our way and will be made available this 2012. Not only that, they've also added a new 86 Aero variant to the line-up. Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like Christmas is coming early.

“Can you feel it? Can you feel the thrill of being alive?”

Brad Pitt or Britney Spears spots aside, car commercials aren’t usually big news, but this one is making waves. Toyota UK commissioned music video director Adam Berg to create a spot to spearhead their “Real Deal” marketing campaign and the result is fantastic. It’s about a man who’s tired of his artificial world of pixels, pretense, and driver assists. A world where “feeling” is a capital offense.

What follows is a combination of “The Matrix”, “Max Payne,” and “The Truman Show”, made in a gritty film noir style. The only complaint is that it's just 90 seconds - about two hours too short, but it does get the point across. Toyota doesn’t make dull, pixelated, pretentious cars, anymore. It makes Toyota GT-86s. And they’re available in red, mind you, not beige and gray. Of course, you don’t have to go to a seedy underground shop to buy one (apparently with a big bag of drug money), you can buy them at your regular Toyota dealership. Or you could if they weren’t sold out.

Oh well, the commercial’s pretty nice.

When Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) launched the facelifted Fortuner and Hilux exactly one year ago, we couldn't help but feel disappointed that, despite the new look, there was nothing new under the bonnet. Well, for those who wanted a little more get up and go from the 2KD-FTV 2.5L D-4D diesel engine, we're happy to announce that your prayers have been answered. In just a few months time, one of the hottest-selling SUVs and pickups in the country will finally receive an upgrade.

Well, if you think things just couldn't get any better, it does. The country's largest automobile manufacturer, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) posted record breaking total sales of 6,258 units for the month of July 2012 - its highest ever in 24 years of operations. Not only that. No other manufacturer or distributor has ever broken the 6,000 mark, until now.
