500_mainToyota Motor Philippines (TMP) began production of completely knocked-down (CKD) and semi knocked-down (SKD) units at its plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna back in 1989. And 23 years later, what is now the Philippines' largest automaker marked yet another milestone when they celebrated the production of their 500,000th vehicle - a brand new Toyota Innova - in a ceremonial line-off held at TMP's headquarters last March 8, 2012.

“This milestone is a testament to the unrelenting devotion to excellence of every Team Member who helped make Toyota Motor Philippines what it is today,” remarked TMP Vice Chairman Alfred Ty. “We shall further solidify Toyota’s partnership with the Philippines while continuing to contribute to economic development in the country. We shall constantly innovate ourselves to meet the dynamic needs of our customers and remain committed to help shape a more progressive future for the Philippines.”

After the Fortuner and Hilux were launched last August 2011, we knew that their last IMV sibling, the Innova, will be coming pretty soon after. And finally, after a six month wait, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) invited an odd 60 of us motoring journalists to the beautiful island of Boracay to witness the arrival of the country's best-selling commercial vehicle (CV) in the most epic way possible. Let me introduce to you the new 2012 Toyota Innova

With six years of experience under its belt, the new Innova is now more cultured for the finer things in life. It went under the knife and got an entirely redesigned front end that some might say now looks a bit like the Camry - a good attribute considering the executive sedan's flair. The front grill, cornered headlights, and blackened fog light housings received updated geometries, while the updated bumper, hood, and fenders are given a more defined character, growing more prominent lines and showing off a bit more muscle. Though the body generally remains untouched, the rear gets a fresh set of clear tail lights and a little nip/tuck for the rear bumper. Added changes were also included for the top of the line variants such as side mirror turn lamps, side skirts, and an altered license garnish.

Toyota on a breakaway lead in the Philippines

triplecrown_2011
Based on CAMPI's latest report, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) can now sit back and relax as it secures a dominating lead over the local automotive industry. As it holds on to its No. 1 position with a firm grip, TMP just beat its own all-time record last October with 5,895 units sold.

Toyota also heads the Passenger Car (PC) segment with a 51.5% market share of 1,957 units, 1,466 of which were comprised of Toyota Vios', the country's No. 1 selling vehicle. In addition, the Japanese giant stretches its lead in the Commercial Vehicle (CV) category by registering its highest ever sales of 3,938 units sold last month, taking a 40.6% chunk of the market. Surprisingly, the Innova was able to increase its sales from the month of September with 1,317 units sold despite the looming arrival of its replacement next year.

After the new Fortuner and Hilux were launched last August 2011, we knew that their IMV sibling, the Innova, should be making its debut sometime soon. But with Toyota Motors Philippines (TMP) tight-lipped about the arrival of its latest MPV, we had to snoop around to find out what's coming our way.

*UPDATE*
The new 2012 Innova has finally landed in the Philippines. Check out the full story by clicking on the link.

Our efforts in rummaging through Toyota's regional websites came out empty handed. Even Toyota Thailand, who usually gets their piece of the pie earlier than the rest of South East Asia, showed no clues what it’s going to look like or when it will be launched. Then, a stroke of luck came when we stumbled upon Toyota Indonesia. With the Innova's assembly plant situated in the world's fourth most populated country, it’s just intuitive to launch it first where it’s made. So a few months ago, the Innova made its debut right under our noses and we've got the specs and official photos here for you.

innova_01Introduced back in 2005, the Toyota Innova took the Philippine automotive market by surprise; replacing the aging Revo and providing a revolutionary mainstream multipurpose people carrier. It’s the lovechild of a full sized van and a sedan resulting in a spacious MPV that drives like a car on big wheels. Haven’t I heard this line before? Stripped down, the J variant is a versatile mode of transport but slab on a set of leather seats and an assortment of features and you’ve got a beautiful luxurious motor carriage with the G and V variant. After years of success selling in the tens of thousands, the aging Innova finally received a much-needed innovation late 2008.
