Their indoor karting facility in Makati might have closed down last December 2012, but City Kart Racing (CKR) is alive and kicking. And to jumpstart 2013, they're offering Kart Clinics for youngsters at the country's international go kart track, Carmona Racing Circuit.

Kart Clinic 2013 is open for Cadet (7 to 11 years old) and Junior (11 to 15 year old) classes. The one day clinic includes go lunch, kart rental, track fee, hands on training, and a mini race. Students will then be trained by non other than former European karting champion Jean-Marc Freihuber and mechanics will always be on hand to keep all the karts in tip top shape. And at the end of the day, each of these new young go kart drivers get to take home their hard-earned diploma plus freebies!

According to Managing Director Jean-Marc “Jeff” Freihuber, City Kart Racing's go-kart track located at the 7th level car park of Park Square 1, Makati City will be no more come 2013. No, they haven't gone out of business. Instead, Ayala Malls have finally decided to demolish the historic mall in January which forces City Kart Racing, and all of its tenants, to find a new home.

While Jeff is tight-lipped over the matter, he did tell us that they're now busy working on opening two new tracks in the near future. They will re-open in a new location that's also within Makati by the 1st quarter of 2013. Meanwhile, City Kart Racing's second track will be situated in Alabang and should be up and operational in one or two months time. There are still no details on where exactly these two new go-kart tracks will be put up, but Jeff did say that at least one, if not both tracks will have awesome features such as a bridge, giant LED screen, and new engines.

So suit up and learn to race the right way from former European Karting Champion, Jean-Marc “Jeff” Freihuber on February 25, 2012 (Saturday).

The half-day Kart Clinic includes a classroom lecture on the basics and fundamentals of go kart racing such as proper seating position, racing line, and braking points. Then go hands on with track sessions to get a grip on how to shed seconds from your lap time. Finally, there's now a Facebook application that actually encourages people to get off their lazy bums and jump into the driver's seat. And to get the word out on their new online feature, City Kart Racing (CKR) Makati rounded up some of the most enthusiastic webbies around town for a day's experience on track at the Blogger's Blaze Fun Cup 2011 last month.

Safety First
With six years of experience in the karting industry, City Kart Racing should have no problems helping more than two dozen anxious amateurs get a grip with the sport. As manager Jean-Marc “Jeff” Freihuber explains it, “Our mission is to provide a racing experience that is safe, exhilarating, and accessible. We are very particular with safety, so we take the time to teach people and employ enough marshals on track to keep everything in check.” That's why before letting everyone loose on track to have the chance to turn it into a destruction derby, we had a quick classroom lesson to get us acquainted with the basic safety rules.

We had a quick chat with rising Irish race car driver Gary Thompson last June while he was on a break from his Formula 3 season. Now that the championship's over and he's back in the Philippines for a short stay, we caught up with Gary once more to find out how his season shaped up and what's in store next for the future Formula 1 star

All-Japan Formula 3 season round up
The 2011 Japanese Formula 3 season was composed of 16 rounds spread over seven race weekends. But due to the devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit in March, the race calendar had to be delayed. Add to that the cancellation of the Rounds 12 and 13 in Suzuka due to a Typhoon. “We had a good year. All year we've been very quick. Maybe lacking a small bit of qualifying pace in comparison to race pace and that made the race difficult. In F3 it is hard to overtake. We've had an uphill struggle all year. We've managed to win some races, a lot of podiums, overall it's a good year,” commented Gary.

At the 6th leg of the 2011 Petron Karting Super Series, City Karting Racing's young talent Tai Zulberti finished on the top spot of the podium after a phenomenal drive from 11th on the starting grid. Held last September 24 and 25, the cadet karts reached speeds in excess of 90km/h on the West Course of the Clark International Speedway (CIS) in Pampanga.

Team spirits were high that weekend as both team drivers Jacob Chamness and Tai Zulberti were excited and prepped up for the races to come. Months of preparation finally paid off when Zulberti clocked the fastest lap in the time trials. But as the first race got underway, disaster struck Zulberti when his kart grinds to a halt. And despite the marshall's best efforts to restart his engine, he was left no other choice but to sit the race out on the grass. The early retirement meant that he would have to start the second race from the back of the grid in 11th.

City Kart Racing (CKR) Makati is pulling out all the stops to make this month go-kart crazy. The madness begins as they offer speed junkies two special promos for the entire month of July. For only P1,500, satisfy your need for speed (and save P460) with three (3) race heats and get a racing license and balaclava for FREE. Seasoned drivers also get a shot of adrenaline on the house, because whenever they bring three first time karters to CKR, he or she gets to race on the ProKarts for FREE. Finally, wacky racers unite on July 16 at the first ever “2 Hours Clock & Counter” endurance race.

The “2 Hours Clock & Counter” race puts a new spin on go-kart racing. 15 teams comprised of 2 to 4 drivers each will race wheel-to-wheel for 2 hours non-stop around the CKR circuit, but here's the twist: The race gets the green flag as drivers pull some quick laps in the clockwise direction. But after a full hour racing, they're flipping the race 180 degrees by resuming the race in the counter-clockwise direction. Moreover, teams are required to return to the pits for a mandatory driver change every 30 minutes. Test skill and stamina as CKR quite literally puts a new twist on endurance racing.
