swift alto800
It was only a month ago when the Alto 800 and Swift Dzire made a surprise appearance at the 2013 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS). Back then, we were told that these Indian-built subcompacts will be launched by the end of April. And true enough, just days before Labor day, Suzuki Philippines Incorporated (SPI) made both cars officially official.

We’re no strangers to Indian-made cars. The Suzuki Alto first made its appearance in our market five years ago. It attracted buyers with its very low price (sub-P400,000) and useable features. Then in 2008, the Celerio followed sporting a 1.0L engine and a slightly larger cabin. And a month before 2011 bowed down, the Alto K10 came in armed with refreshed looks and upgraded engine. But that's not the end of it.

Just recently, India’s leading automobile manufacturer unveiled its latest offering - the all-new Alto 800. It's actually based on the current Alto K10 platform; but according to the New Delhi-based company, the Alto K10 will not cease production because it still sells very well.

k10_mainPerhaps it’s a good measure of the mental state that the Suzuki Alto K10 puts you in, because the very first day I had it, I instinctively put on my old Adidas driving shoes. I haven’t worn these things for the longest time, and last time I was on the racetrack, I bummed it and wore a pair of leather sandals instead. But for the Alto, I pulled my beloved F40 GTs out of the closet and dusted them off. I even polished and laced them properly just for this ride.

It’s even more telling that I raised the Alto's tire pressure from the standard 32 psi up to a rock-hard 45 psi just to get that tiny bit more cornering grip. But what proves it beyond any reasonable doubt is that every time I get out of the K10, I’m grinning from ear to ear.

This is an engaging little car. Even better, it’s the most economical car we’ve ever driven.

Suzuki props the Alto for a K10 upgrade

Lets face it, Suzuki never meant the Alto to turn heads nor to stand out. It's designed to be the staple diet of the masses, just like Jollibee's Yum Burger - cheap, tasty enough, and moderately filling. And that's pretty much why it's Suzuki Philippines’ most popular and fastest-selling compact car. But after some time, the taste does get a bit boring, which is why Suzuki had to spice up the recipe by slathering it with the mechanical equivalent of a slice of cheese and a pickle to come up with the new 2011 Alto K10.
