There are over 6 million registered motor vehicles in the Philippines, producing 30 million tons of CO2 each year and causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and even death. That is why, in line with their “Blue Skies for Our Children” motto, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) recently launched the 1'M Blue Campaign - a program that seeks 1 million committed Eco-Safe Drivers.

Read as “I'm Blue”, the 1’M Blue Campaign aims to address air pollution, climate change, and energy sustainability for the future generation. It does this by (1) influencing driver behavior and consciousness on fuel efficiency and safety, (2) generating support for eco-safe driving, (3) providing learning tools to help create and sustain a positive behavioral change, and (4) reducing vehicle-derived air pollutants, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions.

A recent study by Civil Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has, for the first time, mathematically modeled the effects of road surface on fuel economy. For anyone who's ever gone jogging or cycling, the results aren't terribly shocking: softer roads waste more fuel

Other studies have traced the effects of surface roughness on fuel economy, but this is the first time that the flexibility of the actual road surface has been modeled. The results of this study could have far-reaching implications for the way we build and repair roads.

So that you'd know what your chances are of surviving an accident in an all-new CX-5, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) put Mazda's latest crossover to the test for you. They've crashed it head on, against a pole, and even onto a hapless dummy pedestrian all in the name of safety. And after the dust has settled, not only did the CX-5 pass with flying colors, but it also achieved the maximum five-star safety rating, which pretty much means you, your passengers, and that annoying jaywalker should be able to walk away in case of a crash.

By now, we should all be familiar with Volvo's Pedestrian Detection system. At speeds up to 35 km/h, this kit automatically applies the brakes to avoid hitting a pedestrian ahead. We know it works because our Associate Editor Jade Lu had the unfortunate job of being a crash test dummy while filming Kotse.com's S60 “Trackster” video. Let’s just say, after three takes, she's still in one piece. But now, Volvo's got a new toy that gives a new meaning to “hit and run” with their Pedestrian Airbag Technology that comes standard in the all-new V40.

With the poor traffic conditions and high fuel prices in the Philippines, it comes as no surprise when the latest Shell FuelSave Index shows that Filipino drivers has the top fuel saving awareness in Asia.

According to the study, 94% of those surveyed see fuel efficiency as an important way to save money. That pretty much explains why 87% of them are willing to change their driving behavior to save fuel. Better yet, 85% have actually changed the way they drive to reduce fuel consumption. However, the index has revealed that 20% say that more education and information is needed in order for Filipinos to learn how to drive more efficiently.

So in response to these findings, Shell launched the “Target One Million” campaign to help one million motorists across the globe learn how to save fuel.
