Typoon Sendong hit the island of Mindanao on December 16, 2011, bringing with it 90 km/h winds and more than 10 hours of torrenchial rain. The flash flooding triggered by the typoon took the lives of more than 1,000 people and left over 100,000 homeless just a week before Christmas. The total cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure was estimated to be close to P1 billion.
SPH Managing Director Catalina Calderon remarked, “Suzuki wishes to extend our arms in re-establishing parts of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and even Dumaguete as a community. The Kapuso Village, a site for over 200 homes, will be a living proof of the Filipino people’s solidarity and resilience and we want to be one with them during that rebuilding phase.”
