v40 scene01
It was way back in December of 2012 when we first got word from Viking Cars Inc., the official Philippine distributor of Volvo cars, that the all-new V40 was indeed coming to the Philippines. They said that their most modern five-door five-seater should be here by the “first quarter of 2013.” Well, it's finally here and promises to be “a modern expressive car, with characteristics from larger Volvos wrapped in a sleek, compact package.”

As the saying goes, “when the boss is away, work becomes a holiday.” On the contrary, the people behind Volvo Philippines couldn't be happier when a group of top execs from parent company Volvo Cars Asia Pacific (VCAP) visited to country to show their continued support.

VCAP President, Mr. Carl Goran Larsson, VCAP Chief Finance Officer Roslin Ooi, and VCAP Regional Business Manager Ai Phing Teh paid Volvo Philippines a quick visit to see how things are shaping up so far.

v40 frontquarter
Back in December 2012, we dropped by Volvo Makati to catch up with our friends from Viking Cars Inc. And while checking out their showroom display, we chanced upon their latest 2013 brochure. It listed down all their dealerships, including the upcoming Volvo Alabang and Volvo North EDSA, with their full line-up for the coming year. Of course it had the C30, S40, S60, V60, S80, XC60, and XC90. But there was a particular one that caught our eye, one that wasn't on the list a few months back. It was the all-new Volvo V40. According to one of their staff, it's coming first quarter of this year.

Back in the day, Volvo's were synonymous for making boring, bland soccer-mom station wagons, and was the equivalent of a petrol head’s kryptonite. Owning though one isn’t that bad, especially with its high safety standards and unprecedented reliability made. But in its efforts to capture the attention of a much younger audience, Volvo gave its newest five-door hatchback the R-Design treatment.

The new Volvo V40 R-Design, featured in a special Polestar Racing Rebel Blue shade, is fitted with an aerodynamically-sculpted front bumper and a metal-framed high gloss grill. The rear, on the other hand, gets an ironstone diffuser with more metal details, plus twin exhaust tailpipes to give it a sportier edge. Heck, they've even covered the side mirrors in a metal shell. Finally, you get an option of 17 or 18 inch five-spoke, diamond cut wheels to complement the V40 R-Design's aggression.

Each year, cars are ideally designed and built better as they vie for better scores in crash safety tests such as the Euro NCAP. For example, a full 5-star rating was only achievable by large executive German sedans a decade ago; now, small compact sedans like the 2012 Honda Civic can get a similar rating. But, in all of the Euro NCAP's 15-year history, no other vehicle has scored higher than Volvo's all-new 2013 V40

Receiving the full 5-stars, the Volvo V40 scored 98% in adult and 75% in child occupant safety, 88% in pedestrian safety, and 100% in its safety assist systems. Putting that into perspective, this small Scandinavian hatchback faired marginally better than the current BMW 5-Series.

By now, we should all be familiar with Volvo's Pedestrian Detection system. At speeds up to 35 km/h, this kit automatically applies the brakes to avoid hitting a pedestrian ahead. We know it works because our Associate Editor Jade Lu had the unfortunate job of being a crash test dummy while filming Kotse.com's S60 “Trackster” video. Let’s just say, after three takes, she's still in one piece. But now, Volvo's got a new toy that gives a new meaning to “hit and run” with their Pedestrian Airbag Technology that comes standard in the all-new V40.

The once-conservative Swedes are baring it all at the upcoming 2012 Geneva Motor Show when they bring sexy back at the world debut of the all-new V40. Their latest premium hatchback from Volvo looks like of a love-child of the C30 and S60, boasting more curves and spunk than ever before seen on a Volvo. Intriguingly, they've opted to bring out the five-door version first before the more customary four-door sedan. But when you see just how foxy the all-new V40 is, it's easy to understand why Volvo went with this choice.

Its front end borrows some cues from the more accomplished S60 - mostly around the general area of the hood, grill, and headlights. What sets it apart though is its radically-aggressive front bumper that's ready to cut anything that stands in its path. But as inventive as the Swedes are with their furniture, the all-new V40's squiggly LED daytime running lights sadly fails to impress.
