toyota airbag
Just yesterday, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) issued a voluntary safety recall of some 9,743 units of 2001 - 2002 Civics and CR-Vs due to a faulty passenger side airbag. This was part of Honda's global campaign that involves more than 1.1 million vehicles world wide. Well, from the looks of it, they're not the only one with this problem because fellow Japanese giants Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda are also dealing with the same problem too.

You see, these four have been souring their airbag inflators from Takata - the world's second largest supplier of airbags and seatbelts. But due to a manufacturing defect, the airbags Takata supplied may not inflate correctly and cause injury. So technically, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, or Honda are not at fault as some others would perceive.

mazda6 main
This is the car we've all been waiting for. Well, at least we at Kotse.com have. Why? Because it's the prettiest and most well-engineered midsize sedan we've seen in a long while, not only from Mazda, but from everyone else. The all-new 2013 Mazda 6 is the 3rd generation of the series Mazda started in 2002. Not only is it packed with SKYACTIV technology nose to tail, it also promises a larger interior space and better fuel economy than ever before.

The latest generation all-new Mazda 6 was recently launched at the 2013 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS). Berjaya Auto Philippines, Mazda's new local distributor, even gave us a quick preview at the newly-opened Mazda Pasig before the show opened. So please do hear our reasons why you should want one too.

mazda yojin3
What's the point of having an extended warranty if you'll have to follow a strict preventive maintenance schedule that costs an arm and a leg? Plus, they'll void it even if you miss just one appointment. And don't even get me started about making warranty claims. Please, we're customers, not criminals.

Thankfully, the new people behind Mazda, Berjaya Auto Philippines, wants all their new customers to be treated like family. That's why they created the YOJIN3 Mazda Total Care program so you and your Mazda will have three years of TLC and a worry-free ownership experience.

Derived from the Japanese word “Youjin” which translates as “care” in English, the YOUJIN3 Total Care program offers (a) FREE 3-Year Periodic Maintenance Service, (b) 3-Year Roadside Assistance with exclusive Mazda concierge service, and (c) 3-Year bumper-to-bumper Manufacturer Warranty.

coty9 main
Last Saturday, January 26, 2013, was the final day of the qualitative testing for the 2012 - 2013 Car of the Year Philippines (COTY-P). It was a day for big brutes once again, as Hyundai sent the Santa Fe R-2.2 GLS 6AT 2WD and Premium 4WD, which were matched by Toyota’s Fortuner 4x2 G DSL AT and Hilux 4x2 G MT and Mazda’s CX-5 and BT-50. The Honda CR-V made its reprise with the 2.0 S and 2.4 SX variant, this time made in Thailand with local specs (Honda sent the Japan-made CR-V last time).

It was the fitting ending for this chapter. The cars weren’t too exciting to leave us done and fulfilled at the end of the day; they were mellowed down to leave us wanting more. Of course, “more” would come to us during the technical testing at the Clark International Speedway on February 25 to 27, when the cars will once again converge for the acceleration, braking, and handling tests. But until that comes, we were satisfied enough with the cars we’ve driven to keep us at ease until the end of February. Hopefully, the sky will stay clear of rain clouds and strong winds until then.

With that last hurrah, here are some final words from our writers about the cars of Day 9:

berjaya mazda
Remember back in September 2012, when Berjaya Auto Philippines Inc. signed an agreement with Mazda Motor Corporation to make it the new distributor of Mazda vehicles, parts, and accessories in the Philippines? Well, the day has finally come when they take the helm of this Japanese brand and bring it back to business. And now that they're in control, they have big plans for the brand in the not-so-distant future, which we should all look out for.

The Mazda CX-9 gets the KODO-treatment for 2013

cx9 main
KODO is Mazda's newest design and styling philosophy. According to them, a car's design should “capture the beauty and power of a cheetah pouncing on its prey” or what they simply call as “Soul of Motion.” The first to adopt the KODO ideology was the all-new CX-5 and was followed shortly by the all-new Mazda 6. And for 2013, the next model that steps up to get the KODO-treatment is the CX-9.

First released in 2007, the CX-9 gets a KODO-facelift to give it a new outlook in life and now looks very much like its newest siblings. They've changed the headlights, grill, and front bumper, with minor revisions at the back. But aside from this, there are no major mechanical changes announced for the CX-9.

japancoty cx5
Well waddya know. Contrary to popular belief, the The Toyota 86, and its fraternal twin the Subaru BRZ, apparently is not the best car to come out from the land of the rising sun this year. Beating it by 45 votes is the all-new Mazda CX-5 which earned the coveted title of 2012 - 2013 Car of the Year Japan.

According to the Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) committee, the 86 and BRZ did impress with its “thrilling rear-wheel-drive handling, high-revving boxer engine, and reasonable price. But it was the CX-5's “revolutionary SKYACTIV technology, great handling, and economical clean diesel engine” that impressed the jurors the most.

mazda2 main
Though they're both Japanese, Toyota and Mazda shares absolutely nothing in common... until now. The two automakers came together earlier this month to announce a new partnership that will see Mazda Motor Corporation build cars for Toyota USA at their new plant in Mexico.

While Mazda Motor Manufacturing de Mexico is still under construction, it should start production within the year. And when it does, it'll be building Mazda 2s and Mazda 3s at a rate of 140,000 units per year until March of 2014. After that, the production line will then switch over to manufacturing a new sub-compact Toyota that's based on the Mazda 2 starting on the summer of 2015.
