911gt3 main2013 looks to be a year of milestones as a good bunch of car companies of “super status” commemorate a special event of their being. Ferrari came out with the wicked LaFerrari to celebrate their 70th year, Lamborghini blossomed at 50 with their Veneno triplets, and Aston Martin marks a century with the same stuff but with a neat looking color, nice fabric, and goody bags to go with their toys. Not to stray far from their “super friends” are the kids from Stuttgart, Porsche.

The 911 has held a classic icon status by retaining most of its’ shape since its’ conception in 1963. Even mere mortals with a small drop of gear oil running through their veins can distinguish a Porsche by merely looking at the silhouette. This year, the company celebrates their 50th birthday by making a better thing better-er, this is the new 991-based 911 GT3.

The current 997-based 911 GT3 Cup Car has been in use for around eight years now, and it's about time for a fresh new model to come take its place. So when the seventh-generation Porsche 911 Carrera came into light late last year, it sort of gave us an idea of what their next race car will look like. Well, here it is. This is the new 991-based 911 GT3 Cup Car that will blow your socks off starting in 2013. But more importantly, it's a good indication what the next road-going 911 GT3 will shape up to be when it hits Porsche showrooms in the very near future.

Ok, perhaps it's not exactly 10,000, but with the least capable vehicle available for testing producing almost three times more than your typical subcompact, while the most powerful easily over 500, to it's easy be lulled into thinking that the day's selection had a total power output was within that region... or a bit more. In fact, the experience could undoubtedly be the automotive equivalent of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's “The Greatest Show on Earth.” This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Porsche World Roadshow = a day wherein every model in the Porsche catalog are driven in the manner they were designed to be driven, made possible only by Porsche AG and PGA Cars Inc.

Porsche's 911 has in itself become a timeless icon of performance, beauty, and elegance that brings with it a 48-year heritage of five generations and countless race victories. But this year, the 911's throne must be handed over to a new heir when Porsche crowns the latest addition to the Carrera family, the all-new 991

Staying true to tradition, the completely redesigned 2012 Carrera still takes on the distinctive 911 silhouette. It retains the 911's familiar proportions but with a lowered roofline, wider front track, and a 100 mm streched wheelbase fitted with 10-spoke 20-inch wheels. Its contours are also much leaner, realized through the front and rear bonnet's gentler curves. And if you haven't noticed, the front turn signals now sit on top of the air dams, the side mirrors repositioned on doors, and the tail lights drawn with a smaller taper. Constructed out of aluminum and steel, the all-new body has gone on a stringent diet losing as much as 45 kg in weight, which should help improve the 911's already impressive performance.

Before the current 911 model gets relegated by the up-and-coming 991 next year, Porsche is arming its 997-based 911 GT3 Cup car for a last stand in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The latest 2012-spec 911 GT3 Cup is based on the road-going 997 GT3 RS, as it has been doing so for the past seven years. But according to Porsche, this machine is made to suit a wider range of motorsport races, expanding its reputation as one of the most popular and successful race cars to date.
