Volvo hints arrival of all-new V40 in the Philippines by Q1 2013

Back in December 2012, we dropped by Volvo Makati to catch up with our friends from Viking Cars Inc. And while checking out their showroom display, we chanced upon their latest 2013 brochure. It listed down all their dealerships, including the upcoming Volvo Alabang and Volvo North EDSA, with their full line-up for the coming year. Of course it had the C30, S40, S60, V60, S80, XC60, and XC90. But there was a particular one that caught our eye, one that wasn't on the list a few months back. It was the all-new Volvo V40. According to one of their staff, it's coming first quarter of this year.

The once-conservative Swedes showed their wild side when they unveiled the V40 at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. We believed it to be the lovechild between the C30 and S60, and the results are just ravishing.

Though the brochure fails to give out all the features, it does say that “The Volvo V40 is a premium 5-door, 5-seat hatchback with tons of character and a very dynamic, distinctive profile. With clean elegant lines...” Just look at the pretty pictures and you'll know exactly what their talking about. Looks good, right?

On the other hand, it did spill out all the beans on what the two engine options will be. The first is a 2.0L five-cylinder D4 turbodiesel with 177 hp and 400 Nm of torque, which is mated to a six-speed Geartronic transmission. This gives it a top speed of 215 km/h, 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 8.3 seconds, and fuel economy figures of 19.2 km/L. Meanwhile, the petrol option is the 1.6L four-cylinder T4 engine borrowed from the S60, as well as the six-speed Powershift transmission.

Unfortunately for us lead-footed drivers, the 245 hp turbocharged T5 is not available, or at least not yet.

Aside from its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, these are just some noteworthy safety features the all-new V40 comes with in Europe: start-stop with brake energy regeneration technology, Pedestrian Detection, world's first pedestrian airbag, Lane Keeping Aid with haptic auto steering, Park Assist Pilot, and City Safety. Plus, they also get a very nice panoramic sunroof. Let's just hope that the ones that come to the Philippines have all these goodies.

One thing we're sure of though is that it'll come with a digital instrument cluster (because the brochure said so). That means the regular analogue gauges have been replaced by a fully-customizable LCD screen. Yay!

That's the all the info we got for now on the upcoming all-new V40, but we're sure to share whatever tidbits we gather. And while we're all waiting for it to arrive, just keep on convincing yourself that you want one.
